Oryzias latipes
Oryzias latipes, commonly known as the medaka or Japanese rice fish, is a small freshwater fish that belongs to the family Adrianichthyidae. They are often kept as aquarium fish and are popular for their hardiness and ease of care. The platinum medaka is a color variation of Oryzias latipes that has a striking platinum or silver coloration.
The platinum medaka is selectively bred for its unique color, and it lacks the typical pigmentation found in wild-type medakas. This selective breeding has resulted in a fish with a shimmering, metallic appearance, often resembling polished silver or platinum.
In terms of care, platinum medakas have similar requirements to other medaka variants. They are relatively small fish, usually reaching around 1 to 1.5 inches (2.5 to 3.8 cm) in length, making them suitable for smaller aquariums. They prefer well-planted tanks with plenty of hiding spaces. Medakas are also known for their tolerance to a range of water conditions, but they thrive in a temperature range of 72 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit (22 to 28 degrees Celsius).
It’s important to provide a balanced diet for platinum medakas, including high-quality flake or pellet food, as well as occasional treats like live or frozen foods.
Keep in mind that while medakas are generally hardy and easy to care for, proper attention to water quality, temperature, and diet is essential for their well-being. If you plan to keep platinum medakas, it’s a good idea to research and understand their specific needs to create a suitable and thriving environment for them in your aquarium.
